Masters Facts
How is your knowledge of The Masters? Here are five fun facts about this incredible event.
- The tradition of awarding the tournament winner a Green Jacket did not begin until 1949, with Sam Snead being the first player be given one a Masters Champion
- In 1952, Ben Hogan who came up with the idea of holding a Champions’ Dinner to bring together all previous tournament winners. It has been a yearly tradition ever since, with the winner of the previous year’s tournament having the immense honour of choosing a menu.
- In 1958, a writer for Sports Illustrated called Herbert Warren Wind, named the second half of hole 11, 12 and the first half of hole 13 Amen Corner due to amount of action that took place there that year. He borrowed the name from an old jazz recording called “Shouting at Amen Corner.”
- 1982 was the first year that the players were allowed to bring their own caddies to The Masters. Before then, all players were assigned local caddies for the duration of the tournament.
- Jack Nicklaus has claimed the most Masters Tournament victories, with a mighty six. Nicklaus also became the oldest player to win a Masters Tournament, at 46 years, 2 months and 23 days – in 1986.
- Tiger Woods was the youngest player to win at the Masters. He was just 21 years, three months and 14 days in 1997. He has claimed four more since, including his amazing comeback victory in 2019.
